The Czech Republic will also fight against European Union bureaucracy, Topolanek said after meeting his Greek counterpart Konstantinos Karamanlis. Topolanek started a series of talks in Greece during which he intends to present the Czech EU presidency priorities to European leaders. "The Czech contribution should be putting a far greater emphasis on competitiveness and openness of the EU in economic questions," Topolanek said. In foreign policy the Czech Republic wants to focus on the Western Balkans and trans-Atlantic relations, he said. Karamanlis told journalists that he and Topolanek more or less agreed on all issues during their talks. He pointed out that in the first half of 2009 the EU would probably introduce in practice the Lisbon treaty that sets the new rules for the functioning of the EU institutions. Apart from the Czech EU presidency, Topolanek also discussed trade cooperation and the situation in the Balkans also with Greek President Karolos Papoulias. Topolanek intends to discuss the Czech role at the head of the EU gradually with other European statesmen. For instance, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Prague in October to discuss the EU.
