22.04.2008 - EU backs talks with Taliban, but not al-Qaeda

European Union foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, has backed Pakistan's efforts to talk with Islamic militants, including the Taliban, in the country's restive north-west region.

reconciliation in the country. However, Solana said he was opposed to any negotiations with the al-Qaeda terrorist network, as it operated beyond the Pakistani constitution. Pakistan's new coalition government is attempting to distance itself from the policies of President Pervez Musharraf in dealing with militants. On Monday, Pakistan released a top militant leader linked to the Taliban under a peace agreement with tribal elders.
