Austria's Social Democrats have elected Werner Faymann as their new party chief replacing Alfred Gusenbauer.
The 48-year-old Faymann, who is currently the country's infrastructure minister, became acting party head in June. He will also be the party's top candidate for chancellorship in early parliamentary elections in September. The governing coalition between the centre-left Social Democrats and the conservative People's Party collapsed in July after months of acrimony. Gusenbauer, who is currently chancellor, had held the party chairmanship since April 2000.
