As the second day of Olympic action got underway in Beijing, US swimmer Michael Phelps smashed a world record, taking his first gold of the games in the 400 metre individual medley event.
The win gives him seven career gold medals. China took an early lead in the first full day of Olympic competition, winning two gold medals in women's weightlifting and men's shooting.
